Earth Day 2003 - Celebrating Aldo Leopold's Conservation Legacy

Provide public forums focusing on environmental issues and concerns.

Earth Day 2003-Aldo Leopold Earth day was celebrated with a book signing by Curt Meine,Earth Day 2002 author of the definitive Aldo Leopold biography and director of conservation programs at the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. Traditional, old-time, folk tunes were provided as entertainment by the popular string band White Water. The guest speaker Rob Nelson, Aldo Leopold Foundation education and outreach coordinator, described how individuals can integrate Leopold's land ethic into the natural environment. The activities culminated with the planting of an oak tree at Nicolet's Day Care Center, lunch, and tours of Nicolet's natural areas and the college's renewable energy site.

Environmental Stewardship at Nicolet College

Nicolet College has identified environmental stewardship as one of its five strategic initiatives. The Natural Resources Initiative reads: Nicolet College will practice and work towards increasing district-wide environmental awareness, understanding, and implementation of sound principles of sustainable living.

Past Nature Lecture Series

Natural History and Management of Timber Wolves with Ron Schultz

Ron is a conservation biologist with the Wisconsin Bureau of Endangered Resources. He has specialized in working with wolves for the last 22 years, and has been involved in wolf studies in Montana, Minnesota, and Michigan. His primary job is fieldwork - the capture, tagging, and monitoring of Wisconsin's wolf population.

Astronomy:The Night Sky and a Look at Deep Space Phenomena with Lloyd Giles

Lloyd is an amateur astronomer and an oil painter of deep space phenomena. A retired airline pilot, it was his many years of flying that inspired his fascination with the stars. Lloyd will bring his telescope for demonstration, as well as many of the astronomy books in his library, and possibly a painting or two.

Northern Lakes Research and Ecology with Tim Kratzz

Tim is currently the Director of the University of Wisconsin Trout Lake Limnology Lab in Boulder Junction, which has the reputation for being the best limnology research facility in the United States and possibly the world. Tim has authored numerous scientific papers on a wide array of topics related to Wisconsin's lakes. Tim has a great ability to bring complex science down to earth and make it understandable.

Mammals of Northern Wisconsin with Ron Eckstein

Ron has worked for the DNR for 29 years in forest habitat management and as a wildlife manager for Oneida, Forest and Vilas counties. He did much of the early work in our region banding endangered bird species like the bald eagle and osprey. He hold an MS in wildlife ecology from UW Madison. Ron's responsibilities include management of game and non-game species, from deer and bear to amphibians and warblers.

Renewable Energy Conference

This conference was for WTCS faculty interested in increasing their personal knowledge about renewable energy and integrating renewable energy concepts in their teaching. Renewable energy and its related issues are relevant to general education and liberal arts, as well as business, technologies and the building trades.

The conference offered two seminar tracks to participants. Each track offered sessions on solar, photovoltaic's, wind, green building, and education and renewable resources. Plenary sessions were on geothermal, fuel cells, biogas/biomass and education.

The technical track was for people who were interested in teaching different aspects of installation and maintenance of renewable energy systems.

The general track gave people a non-technical overview of renewable energy from an end user standpoint, and how renewable energy perspectives and information can be integrated into many different curriculum areas, including the liberal arts, general education, health, businesses, technology, and protective services.

Energy Workshop

Introduction To Wind Energy

The workshop provided an overview of wind electric systems and how they work. Topics included an overview of turbine and tower types, determining the wind resources at a site, and the basics of conducting a site assessment.

Introduction To Photovoltaic's

The workshop provided an overview of Photovoltaic (PV) systems, how they work, and the components that make up a PV system. Topics will include conducting a load analysis, effects of energy efficiency on system design, and solar site assessments.

Kurt Nelson--Kurt has been teaching courses for the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) for over thirteen years. He specializes in the design and construction of home sized solar electric and solar hot water systems. He has over fifteen years of experience helping owners and builders learn about and install renewable energy systems. Kurt is a MREA Certified Photovoltaic Site Assessor.

Mick Sagrillo--Mick is a founding member of the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), and has served as its president since 1991. As the founder and former owner of Lake Michigan Wind and Sun, Mick has been involved in over 700 wind system installations. He teaches wind energy courses internationally, and frequently publishes articles on wind power for national magazines.
