The Tomahawk River

S3

The Tomahawk is one of the four rivers whose confluence forms in the city of Tomahawk. In spite of its three dams and two significant reservoirs on this 40-mile-long river, a few undeveloped stretches of river exist. Our instructors will select one of these stretches depending on river flow that day. During lunch and breaks we will discuss the history of the Tomahawk Rivers drainage system which includes both the Willow Flowage and Lake Nokomis. 60 807 65200

Sylvania in Style

S3

Most likely you have heard about the Upper Peninsula's Sylvania Wilderness Area. If you have been there before you will agree that it's an area that has unblemished shorelines, open horizons, deep woods and crystal clear water. If the thought of paddling across several lakes (with not-too-difficult portages in between) and stopping halfway for a lodge stay, shower and dinner is appealing, this adventure is for you. After breakfast the second day, we’ll hike to our canoes and paddle back to our cars. Along the way and in camp the instructors will assist in paddling technique, stretching, body mechanics for lifting boats and other aspects of staying well while paddling. Sylvania started out as an exclusive hunting and fishing club complete with a network of roads leading to secluded lodges, boathouses and lakes with large, cherished trees within the private domain. When Sylvania went public 40 years ago, a major attraction was its northern hardwood and cathedral stands of hemlock. Always managed as a special use area by the U.S. Forest Service, it became part of the Wilderness Preservation System in 1987. Class fee includes lightweight canoes, paddling stories from your experienced leaders, dinner and breakfast in a magnificent lodge. 60 807 65200

Let the river be your classroom! This three-day progressively challenging Upper Peninsula river trip will take you outside of your comfort zone and into the current of three remote rivers. UP rivers are small and swift with a mix of boulder bed rapids, sandstone ledges with rock outcroppings and little development along the river banks. As a group, you will learn and practice safety and rescue skills. We will meet the first day in Watersmeet and determine as a group where we will be headed. 60 807 65209

Tandem Canoe, Lunch & Riverboat Cruise

S3

You may have heard it before: "I will never paddle with that knowit- all again!" Effective communication between bow (front) and stern (back) paddlers along with good boat control are key to an enjoyable canoe experience. Tandem paddlers will learn how to work as a team as well as learn the paddling strokes and river/lake reading skills needed to control a canoe. Participants will learn these skills for part of the morning on Lake Julia next to the Nicolet College Campus. We will then head to the Wisconsin River for a short paddle to practice some of the skills learned in the morning. At the end of the short paddle we will board the Wilderness Queen for a relaxing lunch and boat ride back to our starting point. Canoes will be picked up by staff and also returned to the start.
