Join some of your fellow readers in a discussion of some classic and thought provoking books. This semester will begin with ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin; or Life Among the Lowly’, one of the most influential books in U.S. history. Then we will move on to ‘The Nature of Life: Readings in Biology’, a collection of excerpts from observers of life such as Stephen Jay Gould, Gregor Mendel, James Watson and Edward O. Wilson. The final book of the semester will be chosen by the class.

Condon will facilitate a nationwide course developed by the Foreign Policy Association, which provides an inspiring example of the citizen role in discovering, discussing and deciding how some of the world’s greatest challenges can be met. Topics: Rebuilding Haiti, U.S. National Security, Horn of Africa, Responding to the Financial Crisis, Germany Ascendant, Sanctions and Nonproliferation, The Caucasus, and Global Governance. Each class consists of a DVD presentation of the week’s topic followed by a workbook discussion. Please include an $18 workbook fee (couples may share) with your registration.

We’ll be hoping for open water and warm weather suitable for a spring paddle. Two Sisters is a developed lake, but is spring fed with very clear water and is considered by some to be one of the best swimming lakes in Oneida County. The entire lake is greater than 700 acres and is divided into two basins by a peninsula. We will paddle to Pine Island and beyond. Bring a bag lunch.

Needing space for her fabrics and talents, Louise’s husband built Outback Studio in the backyard of their Irma farm. When in her studio, Louise is “Uniquely Schotz”, creating original quilts and jewelry from recycled metal. The studio is also a classroom, a ministore, and an organized storage facility. Louise invites us into her outback to see her works, many of which have won awards at national quilt shows. You may learn some of her techniques.

What is Public Art? You might be surprised at the scope of projects worldwide. Public art is artwork in the public realm and is free and accessible to all members of the public. It can be temporary or permanent and can cover murals to sculptures, interventions to performances. Public Art can be bizarre, beautiful, puzzling or profound. You will be shown examples of many amazing projects around the globe. Maybe you will even discover YOUR “niche”. This is also a nice chance to visit the new ArtStart home in Rhinelander.
