Ski at Winter Park

Charlotte Schneider, Michael Shores
Jan. 24; 10 am carpool; 11 am at Winter Park
Minocqua Winter Park
Host: Charlotte Schneider 715-499-0785

If you haven’t skied at Winter Park, you have missed out on one of the best trail systems in the midwest. They feature an impeccably groomed trail system of more than 50 km. Trails range from beginner to expert. Trail fee for 65+ is $11 and $13 for ages 18-64. That includes use of the trail system, the heated chalet and restrooms. There is a limited food selection at the Hard Wax Cafe during the week, but feel free to bring a bag lunch. Visit minocquawinterpark.org for ski conditions. The 10 am start time is for the car pool from Rhinelander meeting at the Quality Inn parking lot at 668 W. Kemp; we plan on arriving at Winter Park by 11 am.

Our Night Sky

Joanie Van Clief, facilitator
Feb. 7, 14, 21; 9:30 am
Pine Lake Town Hall
Host: Rita Shores 715-420-0284

This DVD course (with Edward M. Murphy) is called “descriptive astronomy”; it is not for physics or mathematics majors. The course will give you a foundation for navigating the sky on your own. Van Clief will facilitate discussion. Topics include constellations and their stars, seeing and navigating the sky, using binoculars and backyard telescopes, and observing the moon and sun. We will explore what is to be seen in the spring and summer sky. We will set up optional evening sessions with the telescope; members may bring binoculars or a telescope.

Crash Course

Chris Martenson, Ph.D.
Feb. 28; Mar. 6, 13; 9:30 am
Sugar Camp Town Hall
Host: Mike Shores 715-420-0284

We are all concerned about the economy. Dr. Martenson offers a view on this DVD lecture that our economic policies, the end of cheap abundant energy and the impact of seven billion people complicate recovery. His views are not mainstream and may not be correct, but they are thought provoking.
