Spanish 1, 2, 3, or 4   (4 credits)

No previous Spanish required for Spanish 1 students

Language classes at Casa Xelajú (“Shay-la-Hoo”) are held Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., with small group instruction of two to five students per teacher (occasionally one-on-one). Casa Xelajú is a socially responsible educational institute promoting cross-cultural understanding through its Spanish, K’iche (“Quiche”) languages, cultural programs, social projects, internships, and volunteer work. Wonderful cultural activities are available each afternoon. Service and/or volunteer activities are an important, integrated portion of the trip. Five or six afternoons during the trip will be spent in one of the activities, which will vary each year.  For more information on Casa Xelajú: www.casaxelaju.com

Service Learning  (3 credits)

Must be conversationally fluent

Through volunteer work, students gain insight into social issues and problems facing Guatemala and help to contribute to their solutions, while at the same time gaining valuable educational experience. The programs that Casa Xelajú supports are in turn enhanced by the abilities, energy, and goodwill that volunteers bring, thus strengthening the bonds between social work, educational institutions, and cultural organizations.

Opportunities vary each year, but will include things like:

  • agricultural projects
  • animal care
  • art/cultural outreach
  • construction
  • education
  • eco-tourism
  • public health
  • human rights
  • women’s rights
  • children’s educational activities

Quetzaltenango Guatemala

Quetzaltenango, known locally as Xela ("Shay-la”), is the second largest city in Guatemala with a population of 300,000. It is located 130 miles west of Guatemala City, and its altitude of 8,000 feet above sea level ensures warm days, cool nights, and no mosquitoes.

Xela is laced with narrow cobblestone streets built for walking, and filled with the colorful signs of Mayan culture. The city has a rich history and with its six universities and several technical schools, it is often referred to as Guatemala’s cultural center and most progressive city.
