Admission Requirements


1) Complete application form.

2) Submit $30.00 non refundable application fee.

3) Official copy of high school transcript or high school equivalency (HSED).

4) If applicable, official copy of college transcript.

5) Complete the ACCUPLACER entrance exam.

Reading 80
Writing 90
Math 79
Keyboarding 30 wpm ( this is a program pre-requisite)

*Any student not meeting the above scores will be required to remediate through basic education and/or prep courses.

Testing for students is available Monday – Friday, 8:00am-1:30pm . There is no cost for this test. If you have more questions, please call 365-4448.

6) Meet with admission counselor for interview.

7) Once steps 1-6 are completed, you may schedule an appointment to meet with your program advisor by calling 365-4493.

Students accepted into the program will be required to:

  1. Submit proof of health care provider level CPR.
  2. Submit satisfactory medical history form.
  3. Submit proof of all required blood titers.
  4. Submit proof of non-reactive TB skin test within the past three months or negative chest x-ray.
  5. Acceptable Background Information Disclosure form.
  6. Acceptable Wisconsin criminal/caregiver background check.

What does a medical assistant do?


Medical Assistants work primarily in medical clinics or physician offices. Medical Assistants may work in any area of a medical clinic. The responsibilities might include preparing a patient for physical examination, administering injections, obtaining a health history, assisting a physician with an exam, as well as minor or office surgery, performing some tests and procedures independently, and disinfecting and sterilizing equipment and instruments. Some Medical Assistants manage the office, medical records, arrange and confirm appointments, register patients, send bills, receive payments, file insurance forms, handle mail and keep inventory records.

Medical Assistants work directly under the supervision of licensed personnel.


Do you have what it takes to become a medical assistant?


If you enjoy working and talking with a variety of people in a variety of situations, you like working daytime hours with very few weekends, and you enjoy a clean working environment, medical assisting may be the career for you. There will be few dull moments as your contact with infants, children, adults and elderly will encourage and challenge you daily.

You will need to be able to work well with others, sometimes under stressful circumstances. Because you will be working closely with both patients and medical staff, excellent communication skills are a must. As a Medical Assistant, you must be willing to follow directions and be empathetic, be responsible and be flexible.


What is the program like at NATC?


The Medical Assistant program at NATC currently consists of the fall and spring semester of one academic year. It takes hard work and dedication for an individual to be successful in becoming a qualified Medical Assistant as the educational program is rigorous and requires careful planning and study. Good math skills are important and study habits are a must.

The first (fall) semester of the program is spent on campus. The first 10 weeks of the second semester (spring) also are on campus. The last six weeks of the second semester are referred to as clinical externship and consists of 32 hours per week in area medical clinics.

Transportation to the clinical sites is the responsibility of each student. Access to the use of a car will be necessary for some of the clinical assignments which may not be accessible by public transportation or are located in outlying communities such as Tomahawk, Minocqua, Eagle River and Crandon. Students shall not receive compensation/payment, monetary or otherwise, from the externship site.


What happens after graduation?

The Nicolet Area Technical College Medical Assistant program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP, on the recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (AAMAE). After graduation, students are eligible to take the National Certification Examination. If successfully completed you will be a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).

Are good jobs available?

Medical Assistant is expected to be one of the 10 fastest growing occupations through the year 2006. There is a good likelihood that the job market for medical assistants will remain strong for many years to come.

What are medical assistant program costs?


Tuition for academic year 2008-09 is approximately $4000.00. Books and supplies are separate. The student must also purchase uniforms and shoes for clinical externship.
