Admission Requirements:

  1. Complete Application to Nicolet College.
  2. Submit official high school transcripts and any official college transcripts to Nicolet College or GED.
  3. Submit $30 application fee payable to Nicolet Area Technical College.
  4. No admission testing is required for this certificate.

What does a phlebotomist do?

The role of the phlebotomist involves the preparation and maintenance of equipment for obtaining blood specimens, establishing a professional relationship with the patient, the selection of the blood collection site and method, the collection and care of the blood specimen, the documentation of the collection process into a computer, and clerical duties associated with the record keeping of the laboratory tests.

Do you have what it takes to be a phlebotomist?

Phlebotomists must enjoy working with and serving people, have good interpersonal relationship skills, are able to follow directions, work independently, and can solve problems. You will be required to utilize all of your sensory skills and perceptions. You must have good written skills. You must be able to stand for long periods and be able to push, pull, bend, and lift up to 60 pounds.

Additionally:

  • You will be drawing blood specimens in the emergency room and on critically ill patients.
  • You will be handling and processing all normal and abnormal body fluid specimens from patients.
  • You must be able to interact with trauma patients, chronically ill patients, acutely ill patients, and terminally ill patients of all ages.
  • You must provide services to all patients, regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, physical or mental handicap, physical condition or disease process.
  • You must be an honest, compassionate, ethical and responsible person.

What is the phlebotomy certificate like at Nicolet?

The Phlebotomy certificate provides practical training in the collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and routine capillary puncture. Students will complete theory classes, lab classes and be expected to participate in a 100 hour clinical phlebotomy experience. Nicolet will accept 12 students into phlebotomy clinical each semester. Clinical selection is based upon successful completion of all required courses prior to entering clinical.

Clinical requirements include:

  • CPR certification that will not expire while you are in clinical.
  • Acceptable criminal background check (http://wi-recordcheck.org) Must include Department of Justice and Department of Health and Family Services.
  • Blood titers and TB skin test

What about furthering my education?

The courses within the phlebotomy certificate allow the student to work in a healthcare setting with the potential to career ladder into the Medical Assistant program or the Clinical Laboratory Technician program.
