Federal Financial Aid

The Financial Aid/Veterans' Office provides information about financial aid and assists students seeking financial aid. Although the major responsibility for financing a college education resides with the student, Nicolet College is able to assist students in meeting their educational expenses. Assistance may be in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, employment, or a combination of these.

Many of the financial aid programs are based upon financial need. Financial need is the difference between the student's established educational expenses and resources the student and/or family should have available to meet those costs. They include the following:

  • Grants are financial aid that does not have to be paid back.
  • Work-study enables students to work and earn money to help pay for school.
  • Loans are borrowed money which must be repaid with interest.
  • Scholarships are similar to grants in that there is no obligation to repay them. Scholarships generally are not need based. Academic achievement and service are the main criteria. For more information contact the Financial Aid/Veterans' Office at 365-4423.

Federal Financial Aid Application Process and Programs

Students can apply for federal aid by completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students should submit a FAFSA through the Internet by using FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov . Students need to apply each academic year.

FAFSA on the Web is a free U.S. Department of Education Web site where students can complete a FAFSA online and submit it via the Internet. Students should apply as soon after January 1 as possible. (Application before January 1 is not possible). Students must complete the application after preparing their U.S. tax returns, so consider it best to complete the tax return as early as possible.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-study Program provides jobs for undergraduates and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student's course of study. To receive Federal Work-Study you must select this option when filling out your FAFSA form.

Veterans' Services

Many veterans of military service are eligible for educational assistance in the form of financial aid, tutoring, and counseling through the U.S. Veterans Administration, the Wisconsin Dept. of Veterans Affairs, and Nicolet College. Disabled veterans are eligible for additional benefits.

Children and spouses of veterans who died, became totally disabled, M.I.A., or captured as a result of military service may be eligible for educational assistance.

It is the responsibility of the student receiving veteran educational benefits to promptly notify the Financial Aid/Veterans’ Office of changes in enrollment, dependents, or address. For further information, contact the Financial Aid/Veterans Office, phone 365-4423.

A new Wisconsin Veterans program called the Wisconsin GI Bill allows Wisconsin Veterans to receive a 100% tuition remission and spouses or dependents of eligible veterans to receive a 100% tuition remission. Contact the Financial Aid/Veterans Office for specific details.

Grants

Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation of financial aid to which other aid may be added.

Talent Incentive Program Grants provide assistance to the most needy and educationally disadvantaged Wisconsin resident students attending Nicolet. Eligibility cannot exceed ten semesters.

Wisconsin Higher Education Grants provide grant assistance to undergraduate, Wisconsin residents enrolled at least half time in degree or certificate programs at Nicolet.

Indian Student Grants are made to Wisconsin residents who are a least twenty-five percent Native American and are undergraduate students enrolled in degree and certificate programs at Nicolet. Awards are based on financial need with a limit of ten semesters of eligibility.

An Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG) are for full time undergraduate students who receive Pell Grants and also have completed a rigorous secondary school program of study. Loans

Nursing Student Loans

Nursing Student Loans are available to students accepted into either the Associate Degree Nursing or Licensed Practical Nursing programs. Students must be Wisconsin residents and demonstrate financial need as determined by completing the FAFSA.

For nursing program graduates who become licensed RN or LPN and work in Wisconsin for a least two years, 50% of this loan may be forgiven.

Federal Stafford Loans

Federal Stafford Loans are either subsidized or unsubsidized. A subsidized loan is awarded on the basis of financial need. Subsidized loan recipients will not be charged any interest before the repayment period or during authorized periods of deferment. The Federal Government "subsidizes" the interest during these periods.

For subsidized loans, students will not be charged interest while enrolled in school at least half time, during a grace period, or during authorized periods or deferment. Interest will begin to accrue - that is, accumulate - at the start of the repayment period.

An unsubsidized loan is not awarded on the basis of need. Unsubsidized loan recipients will be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. If interest accumulates, it will be capitalized - that is, the interest will be added to the principal amount of the loan and additional interest will be based upon the higher amount.

For unsubsidized loans, students will be charged interest from the day the loan is disbursed until it is repaid in full, including while enrolled in school. There are no grace or deferment periods. Students may choose to pay the interest during these periods, or it can be capitalized. Students can receive subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans for the same enrollment period. The interest rate is fixed at 6.8%. First-year students enrolled in a program of study who are taking at least a full academic year may borrow $3,500. Students who have completed their first year of study and the remainder of their program is at least a full academic year may borrow $4,500.

First-time student loan borrowers are required to complete Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note. To complete Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note click here.

To complete a Master Promissory Note only click here.

Prior to completing a degree at Nicolet, all student loan borrowers are required to complete an Exit Counseling Session. To complete an Exit Counseling Session, click here.

Parent Plus Loans

Plus Loans enable parents with good credit histories to borrow for the educational expenses of each child who is a dependent undergraduate student enrolled at least half time. The yearly limit on a PLUS Loan is equal to the cost of attendance minus any other financial aid received. For example, if the cost of attendance is $6,000 and the student receives $4,000 in other financial aid, the parents could borrow up to-but no more than- $2,000. The interest rate is fixed at 8.5%. Interest is charged on the loan from the date the first disbursement is made until the loan is paid in full. Return of Title IV funds calculation. Students who completely withdraw from Nicolet prior to the end of 60% of the semester will be required to repay a percentage of the financial aid received. Students should contact the financial aid office before withdrawing to find out what their repayment obligation may be.
